About the construction project

FDOT expanded the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to include 56 miles of I-75 in Manatee and Sarasota counties.  The project added closed-circuit television cameras, Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), roadside sensors and fiber optic communication cable and transmission equipment along the interstate.  The Intelligent Transportation System enhances traffic management and mobility by providing real-time traffic conditions which are monitored 24 hours a day by operators at the SWIFT SunGuide Center, located in Fort Myers, and the Manatee County Traffic Management Center (TMC).  Traffic conditions are then relayed to drivers via the dynamic message signs to prepare them for what is ahead and allow time for drivers to make decisions about their route.  ITS also enhances emergency response time to accidents and reduces secondary accidents that create extended delays.  Amber Alerts and Silver Alerts are also posted on the message signs to assist law enforcement in locating those persons.  ITS is now fully integrated along I-75 in Southwest Florida from Manatee County to Lee County (approximately 190 miles total).
